Are your teeth chipped or worn? Are they stained and yellowed? Do they have gaps between them? Then veneers might be the right choice for you. A marvel in cosmetic dentistry, veneers cover a wide range of dental issues and leave the patient looking and feeling confident and refreshed. So what are dental veneers, anyway? They're wafer-thin, custom-made, tooth-colored coatings made to cover the front surface of teeth and enhance your appearance. The coatings are bonded to the front of the teeth to make them appear straighter, taller, whiter, or just more visually pleasing in general.
So how many people have veneers? As a testament to their popularity, nearly 600,000 veneers are applied yearly. And as a testament to their quality, veneers are even used by some of Hollywood's biggest celebrities. These celebrities include Tom Cruise, Zac Efron, George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Celine Dion... and the list goes on. Do a little research, and you might be surprised to find that your favorite star has had veneers for quite some time!
If you're planning a smile makeover and believe that veneers would be a big help, don't hesitate to give us a call at (562) 356-0948 right away! We're always here to assist and get you looking your best.
Dental Veneers: What To Expect
Here's how we work our dental veneer magic
Are you considering dental veneers, but want to know more about how the procedure works first? It's rather simple, actually. The process of getting dental veneers involves three phases, the first being an initial consultation. Here, we'll discuss any initial questions or concerns you may have and determine whether you're a good fit for the treatment. We'll discuss other possible options as well, like bonding or braces. If you agree that veneers are the best way to go, then we'll move on to the second phase. For your next visit, we'll prepare your tooth to receive the veneer by stripping away an ultra-thin layer of enamel from it. This layer is usually the same level of thickness as the shell that will replace it. Next, we'll take impressions of your teeth and send them to the lab, where your veneer will be designed, sculpted, and readied. It usually takes one to two weeks after your mold is created to get your veneers back from the lab.
At this time, you may schedule your next appointment. For your third visit, your teeth are thoroughly cleaned so that no bacteria winds up being trapped under the veneer, potentially resulting in cavities and other problems. Next, we use a grinding tool to create a rougher texture on the tooth where the veneer is to be applied. This makes it easier for the veneer to attach. Next, we apply a special binding cement to the inside surface of the veneer and then place it on your tooth. Sometimes a high-intensity, ultraviolet light is used to harden the cement more quickly. After that, you're done! This visit shouldn't last more than two hours. Once you return home from your procedure, you can eat and chew food as you usually would. You may be pleased to know that there isn't really a recovery period as there is for other dental procedures!

How do I know if I need a veneer or a crown?
Veneers are used with only cosmetic improvement in mind. In contrast, crowns involve more significant removal of healthy tooth structure and are used when the tooth is suffering from decay or needs a root canal.
-
Do veneers look fake?
There is an ongoing debate about veneers that are crafted to look absolutely perfect, versus the growing trend of "natural" looking veneers that are constructed with imperfect features on purpose. It all depends on your preference and the ceramist who designs your veneers.
-
Do veneers stay white?
Yes, veneers will stay bright white for many years after being applied. Dental porcelain is very stain-resistant.
-
Do veneers make your teeth bigger?
Veneers only make your teeth bigger if that's part of your aesthetic goal. A small layer of enamel is removed from the tooth to compensate for the amount of material being added.
-
Do veneers cause gum recession?
If veneers are properly applied, then they will not cause any recession. A good cosmetic dentist will keep the edges of the veneers slightly away from the gum line.
-
How long do porcelain veneers last?
With proper care, veneers can last about ten years. However, they can last shorter or longer in differing circumstances.
-
Can teeth rot underneath the veneers?
As long as you take care of your teeth after receiving veneers, you won't have to worry about tooth decay or rot. However, if you take poor care of your teeth, then it is entirely possible that you could experience cavities because veneers don't cover the entire tooth.
-
Can veneers fall out?
Veneers are permanent fixtures and seldom fall off. However, a sudden impact could potentially loosen veneers. The adhesive bonding also becomes weaker over long periods of time, increasing the chances that they may detach.
-
How much do dental veneers cost?
The cost of dental veneers varies largely depending on the dentist as well as the amount of prep work involved to make your specific set. Give us a call if you'd like to discuss specific price ranges.
Dental Bonding vs. Veneers
Should you opt for porcelain veneers or dental composite bonding?
Both veneers and bonding have their pros and cons. Here are some side-by-side comparisons to help make it easier for you. Porcelain veneers, by their very nature, are resistant to stain, while composite bonding can and does stain. Veneers reportedly look better and shinier than bonding, and in general, veneers last quite a
few more years than bonding. Veneers are also harder to chip or break than composite bonding. In fact, the procedure has a reputation for being permanent and irreversible. However, in bonding's favor, the bonding process involves altering less tooth structure than with porcelain veneers. It also
requires less time and material to complete the process, which allows costs to be cheaper. For more information on bonding and veneers, give us a call for a free consultation. We will be glad to explore all of your cosmetic options so you can be confident you are making the right choice for you!
